Day One-seventy-two

So the shelf we built in the kitchen is taking shape. All the support pieces are in place and the whole shebang has its first coat of paint to match the cabinets.

As part of our effort to reduce the moisture level in the basement, we'll be running our dehumidifier for long stretches and draining it straight into the sump pump so we don't spend half our time emptying it. With this in mind, we needed a sump pump from the 21st century and had it installed this week.

As promised, the cement in the new walkway has lightened up nicely to match the re-coated steps. We also took the opportunity to redesign the front a bit--cutting back the overgrown bushes, planting some low flowers, and redistributing the football-sized rocks that set off the garden. We also moved some of the rocks over to the other side of the front to replace some moldy and rotting railroad ties that provided the border on that side.

We did have one setback this week. When the plumber was here to install the sump pump and new pipes, he used the spigot on the front of the house to wash (you can almost see it to the left of the hose). We discovered that when this is turned on it pumps water into the cinder block wall, likely because of a crack in the supply pipe in the wall. He'll be back out this week to replace that. But in the mean time, let's enjoy the new rock border!
